Packing a home is quite a big task, and we’re sure most of us can agree with that. Moving from one home to another takes a lot of planning and mental and physical strength. It is, therefore, essental to know how to pack your home properly, so you have a quick and easy move day. Today we will share 9 kitchen packing tips that will help you pack your kitchen sufficiently.
The kitchen is probably the hardest room to pack as it has a lot of appliances, fragile (glasses, plates, etc), and small items. That fact may be demotivating at times as the smaller things could take more time to pack. Buy enough packing supplies so you are ready and able to pack quickly.
We also understand that packing a kitchen alone can be overwhelming. Always ask for help from your family and friends.
There is no specific section to start when packing the kitchen, however, below is an idea of the steps you should take to complete packing.
- Pots to hold small items
- Place plates vertically in the box
- Wrap utensils with liners
- Wrap utensil tray
- Stack the pots
- Protect glassware
- Unplug and defrost the fridge
- Unplug appliances
- Pack all liquids in one box
1. POTS TO HOLD SMALL ITEMS
Take out all big pots and put them aside so you can use them as storage to hold small kitchen utensils. This will save you a lot of space. Do not overly pack the pots though as you don’t want them to be too heavy to lift.If there are pots you haven’t used in more than 6 months to a year, get rid of them or give them away to people who are in need. Also, if any of your pots or cutlery have rusted, throw them out as they can be dangerous to use.
- PLACE PLATES VERTICALLY IN THE BOX
Placing plates vertically in the box will create more space for other items. It is best to put plates of the same size vertically to reduce breakage. Put paper or bubble wrap between the plates for protection. You should be able to close the box with ease after putting the plates in.
Of course, this is not for all plates; flat plates work best for this. If you have deep plates then place them as you normally would.
- WRAP UTENSILS WITH LINERS
Kitchen utensils are probably the worst thing to pack, well at least for me. They can get all over the place and are dangerous which is why you’ll need to take extra caution when packing them.
There are different types of liners and protective supplies for utensils. When shopping for packing supplies, ask the home store assistant to show you what works best and which liners are the right ones for your specific utensils. You can also use any old unused magazines or newspapers that you have in your home to wrap your utensils.
- WRAP UTENSIL TRAY
Some utensil trays need protection. If you have glass, wood or hard plastic ones then consider wrapping them to prevent scratches and any other damage that may occur while in transit or while packing. You don’t have to do this, but if you want longevity of the tray, then consider it.
- STACK THE POTS
If you prefer not to put any small items in your pots, then consider stacking your pots from the biggest to the smallest. Stacking will save space and make it easier when you’re unpacking because all the pots will be in one place. Try to save pot boxes when you purchase them if you have enough storage space in your home and use that box when moving to put your pots in.
- PROTECT GLASSWARE
When buying packing supplies, don't forget to buy protection paper or bubble wrap for glassware in your kitchen. Use any extra newspapers or unused plastic bags to protect glasses if you don't have any glass protectors.
- UNPLUG AND DEFROST THE FRIDGE
Once you’ve emptied all the food and beverages from the refrigerator, unplug and defrost it. The best way to defrost is to unplug the fridge overnight so that you wake up to a clean (no ice) fridge in the morning. If the refrigerator still has some ice left, just throw it out and try not to scrape any ice off of the freezer as that can damage the fridge.
- UNPLUG APPLIANCES
Unplug and clean all your appliances as one of the last steps to packing your kitchen. With all the right packing supplies, wrap and protect them and make sure they are handled with extreme caution when loaded into the moving truck.
Cleaning appliances before you move will make things easier for you when you get to your new home.
- PACK ALL LIQUIDS IN ONE BOX
This is if you have any beverages whether canned or bottled. Place all cans in a different box than the glass ones. Mark the boxes as fragile and be careful when carrying and placing them in the truck. Once you’ve packed everything in your kitchen, you’ll be all good to go. Do last-minute cleaning of the kitchen and make sure it is ready for the new owners.
