Moving change of address checklist

So you’ve got your moving date and are ready to move, but you’re not sure about your moving checklist? We can agree that moving requires more than one checklist, from packing lists to moving change of address checklists. These lists are very important and you should make sure you check off everything on your list before you move. Making a moving change of address checklist is the most important checklist whether you’re moving a few blocks, to a different city or state.

We have come up with a list of the things to consider putting on your address change checklist.

‍Lighting Company

‍When you’ve finalized your moving date, calling your cable and lighting company should be a top priority. Some cable and electric companies may be available at your new address. Inform them on time to pay off your bill and possibly transfer your services to your new address if possible.

‍IRS

‍This is probably the most important thing. When filing taxes using an agency, you should inform them so they know you’ve moved. If you’re moving to a different state, find a new tax agency and bring all your paperwork from the previous agency with you just in case. You should be careful about this because you don't want to be paying taxes in the state you don't live in. This mistake could cost you a lot.

Also, the government needs to know your new address so they could send your tax return to your new address. You don’t want to miss your money by forgetting to do this. You can update your form online. Some people prefer to receive the money directly into their bank accounts. You can do that by changing your address online and setting up your bank account information.

‍Social security office

‍The government needs to be updated about your move especially if you receive benefits from them. You can easily change your address online and update your Information. Once you do this, you will be able to continue receiving payments from the government.

Employer

‍Let your employers know that you’re moving to give enough notice if that’s a requirement. If you’re able to transfer to another city to work for the same employer then you’d just give them your new address before you move. If you’ll be working for a different company though, then inform your new employer of your address at least 3 to 4 weeks before the move. This allows your previous employer to send you important tax documents and other important documents that you’ll need to present when you start your new job.

‍Post office

‍This is one thing you should do as early as possible. Change of address is great so your bills start coming to your new address as soon as you’ve moved. You can do this by creating an account online and changing the address by completing an online form, or you could go to the post office and fill out the form there. The latter process takes a bit longer though so changing your address online is the best option.

‍Phone, cable, and internet providers

‍If you have these services in your home, then you need to call your cable company and change your address. If your current provider is not available where you’re moving to, then find a new provider and have all that set up before you move.

Other utilities

‍Garbage and home security are amongst a few other utilities that the address should be changed. Call your providers and get this done at least 2 weeks before the move.

‍Renters and homeowners insurance

‍Very important to change your address on your home/renter’s insurance policy. This needs to be done early because you want to have your new home “covered” by the time you move in. There are also other insurance companies that you should inform. Those include:

• Car insurance
• Life insurance
• Medical insurance

PRO TIP: Don’t forget to do this as failing to do it may cause a lapse in your policy.

Doctor/ Paediatrician

‍Changing doctors or pediatricians is very understandably challenging because people tend to form a bond with their medical care providers and it's hard to trust someone new with your health. Giving you and your child/children’s doctor your new address is imperative because they can send your medical records to your new address or your new doctor.

Another thing you could do is find out beforehand if your doctor’s office has the same office available in your new city or state. It is important to do this ahead of time. So we would suggest you do this a month before your move. Also, make a note to inform your dentist and any other healthcare providers you may have.

‍DMV

‍As soon as you’ve moved to your new state or new address even if it's in the same state, you need to go to the DMV and change your address so you could get a new license or identification card that has your current address. This is very important and should be done within the first 30 days of your move.

‍Bank or financial institution

‍Your bank should be one of the first places you inform of your new address. This is can be easily done online or on your bank app. We recommend you do this at least a week or 2 before you move.

‍Subscription services

You don’t want to be stuck wondering what happened to your favorite subscription magazine that you’ve been receiving every month right? So make sure to check all your subscriptions and change them to your new address. You can change the address of your subscriptions online or by calling in.
